Sculptor and photographer Daniel Corbeil was born in Val-d’Or, in the Abitibi. Although he has lived and worked in Montreal for many years, the fact of having grown up in an industrial mining environment has greatly shaped his imagination. It also spurred artistic reflections on the representation of constructed landscapes where the human element is often felt to be problematic. Concerned with the environmental disruptions caused by industrialization and urbanization, the artist produces installations, photographs, and models that employ the idea of technical simulacra as a playful means of grasping and questioning the real.
Whether it be a matter of flying, zoomorphic devices, of concocted areal shots, of laboratories for reproducing the effects of global warming, or of architectural models proposing utopian responses to environmental upheavals, Corbeil’s work interrogates both our perception of the world and our ability to transform it.
